This Yo-kai is based on the Tanuki (Japanese: 狸,Tanuki), a notorious shapeshifter who often transforms to cause mischief onto humans, though Bunbuku Chagamaru is more specifically based on the Bunbuku Chagama fairy tale, in which a tanuki is rescued from a trap by a poor man, and uses his shapeshifting powers to turn into a cast-iron tea kettle (Japanese: 茶釜,Chagama) to repay him for his kindness.
The giant golden bell he wears, on the other hand, is a representation of one of the tanuki's signature traits, their over-sized testicles (Japanese: 金玉,kintama), which they sometimes use like drums or even shapeshift into various things. Their testicles are part of their 8 lucky traits, with the other seven being: a kasa hat; a promissory note; a sake gourd; a big fluffy tail; big round eyes; a round belly; and a winsome smile
