Etymology
Origin
Chochin-obake is based on the chōchin-obake (提灯お化け, "paper lantern ghost"), a tsukumogami (common item youkai) born from an oiled paper lantern. When they turn into youkai, the paper splits along the bamboo ribs, forming one or two eyes and a grinning mouth with a lolling tongue. Generally fairly harmless like most tsukumogami, there are however stories of vengeful ghosts possessing paper lanterns, most notably the ghost of Oiwa from the highly influential kabuki play Yotsuya Kaidan.
