Whisper's Secret Past (Japanese: 妖怪軍師ウィスベェ Yōkai Gunshi Wisubē) is the 47th episode of the Yo-kai Watch anime series. It was broadcasted in Japan on December 12, 2014, and in the United States on November 12, 2016.

Summary[]

After Whisper is insulted for being called a "know-nothing" from Jibanyan, they are both sent to back to the past by Kin and Gin to relive Whisper's time, aiding Shogun Waitington.

Story[]

Nate teasing Whisper

While Whisper is cleaning his Yo-Kai Pad, Nate barges in, claiming a Yo-Kai is making Bear dance and act like a fool. Whisper dismisses this, claiming its normal to dance. Nate then brings up the fact that Whisper always has an excuse and is unreliable and therefore he is useless without his Yo-Kai Pad. Nate questions Whisper's true abilities, and whether he is a real Yo-Kai.

Jibanyan questions Whisper why he keeps his abilities secret. Whisper explains that his power is "destructive" and is a curse. Whisper then brings up the concept of him being split from Nate because of his powers, to which Jibanyan is okay with.

Kin and Gin sneak up behind the two, and state that Nate would have never been able to meet and interact with Yo-Kai if he never met Whisper. Kin throws a Time Stone in the air, which sends Whisper and Jibanyan back in time. They explain that if Whisper can make the right choice, him and Nate will never meet, and the course of Yo-Kai Watch will be prevented.

The narrator shows that the year is 1590, and that it is a warring states period.

Naoto in the anime

When Whisper wakes up, he is confused while lying on the ground. Jibanyan is next to him, who is now actually Rudy. They explore the area they landed in, which is an old town full of working people, traditional Japanese food, and mountains. Upon exploring, Whisper finds Naoto and remembers this is the boy he used to inspirit. Just as he is remembering, some cloudy green gas comes out of Whisper's mouth. Naoto spouts lies in front of townspeople, but they do not fall for it. Confused, Naoto deals with a lot of criticism from townspeople. This is where Whisper finds out that he is now in his past form, Nonuttin. Rudy finds out about his power, and they both hear Naoto claiming a Yo-Kai is responsible for this.

Some townspeople urgently run up to Naoto and inform him that Shogun Waitington is calling for him. Nervous, Naoto, Rudy, and Nonuttin head towards Waitington's castle. Naoto is brought upon Waitington, who introduces himself. A monk attendant is seen next to him. He then asks about the legendary sword Fuuketsumaru, thinking Naoto knows about it due to the lies he spouts. Seeing that Naoto is hesitant to tell him, Waitington intimidates Naoto. Right as Naoto is about to tell the truth, Nonuttin inspirits Naoto, which makes Naoto lie even further about the sword's location. Surprisingly, Waitington falls for this, and is eager to try and find his sword. The monk attendant notices something is off with Naoto.

Waitington at the waterfall
Waitington’s armies failed to find the Fuuketsumaru sword. Waitington agrees with his army and begins to doubt Naoto. He begins to intimidate Naoto, which causes Naoto to confess about a Yo-Kai possessing him. Waitington does not believe in the Yo-Kai, and death threatens Naoto. However, before Waitington can behead Naoto, his monk attendant interrupts. He claims that a Yo-Kai is indeed inspiriting Naoto. He attempts to purify Naoto, which results in Fuuketsumaru being revealed to Waitington. It turns out Fuuketsumaru was a reflection of a sword in the nearby waterfall. Being impressed by this, Waitington wants Nonuttin to inspirit him and join him in battle. Kin and Gin then appear, and send Nonuttin and Rudy years in the future.

Nonuttin and Rudy are now at a major battle with Waitington. Waitington is indecisive, and claims he doesn’t have the strength to lead armies. Nonuttin offers advice, and Waitington excitedly accepts. Nonuttin advised to not retreat but to light a fire to confuse the enemies. Waitington does not agree to this, and critiques Nonuttin for such an outlandish tactic, but Nonuttin ends up inspiriting Waitington. Waitington announces his plan to the army, and once the inspirit wears off, he is confused, yet his army still follows through and sticks to the plan. The plan does work, thanks to Waitington’s good luck.

Waitington at sunset

It is sunset, and Waitington thanks Nonuttin for another successful battle. Nonuttin doubts himself, but Waitington claims that he is a Yo-Kai of good use. He then officially promotes Nonuttin to a Yo-Kai Tactician. He gives him the name Whispocrates (Dub only). Whispocrates and Rudy are sent in time travel once again, where the narrator explains that Waitington’s reputation was raised and that he is a better shogun.

Mitsunari & Whisbei.

Upon arrival outside of Waitington’s castle at night, Waitington is seen clearing his mind in the peaceful night. When Whispocrates heads towards Waitington, Waitington knows. Waitington can now sense when Whispocrates is around. Waitington thanks Whispocrates for his popularity and best status. Waitington then reveals that he is fighting for his master and family, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He proves that he will do whatever it takes, even if it means losing his life one day. He also proves his gratitude towards Whispocrates. Whispocrates is flattered, and then Nonuttin and Rudy are sent to another major battle.

Kin and Gin tricking Whispocrates

Waitington is fighting in his decisive battle, Sekigahara, when his armies are betrayed by Kobayakawa Hideaki. Believing the battle is not over and they still have hope, Waitington urgently asks Whispocrates for advice. Whispocrates does not know what to say, and Waitington demands for a tactic. This is where time is paused. Kin and Gin appear, and resonate with Whispocrates that if he goes and distracts the enemy camp, Waitington could live. Rudy, however, resonates with Whispocrates that if he does so, he will never meet Nate in the future. With the choice of continuing his life with Nate or Waitington, he chooses to continue his life with Waitington. Time continues to flow, and Whispocrates reveals that he is not a Yo-Kai Tactician, and that Waitington’s victories were all thanks to his good fortune. Being depressed and shocked from hearing this, Waitington scolds Whispocrates for deceiving him. Whispocrates makes it up by claiming he will go distract the enemy camp.

Waitington charging off

Waitington stops Whispocrates while he was headed there. He tells Whispocrates that he was going to lose anyway, and that he wanted to die fighting in honor of his family. He asks Whispocrates to inspirit him one last time, and Whispocrates does, tearfully. Waitington rallies his army and gets ready to head for battle. While on his horse, he hears Whispocrates apologizing for deceiving him.

Waitington smiling and forgiving

Instead of being angry, Waitington forgives Whispocrates, and thanks him for an enjoyable life. He states that he could never see Whispocrates, and that he wanted to see him before he departed. He says his final goodbye to Whispocrates, and charges off to battle. Now sobbing, Whispocrates turns back to Whisper. Kin and Gin are annoyed at the fact that nothing changed, and call Waitington a fool. Whisper and Jibanyan are now back to normal, and Jibanyan now has a clear understanding of Whisper’s past. He insults Whisper for needing his Yo-Kai pad, and Whisper aggressively shakes Jibanyan. Nate finally asks for the Yo-Kai Pad in the house.

Whisper and Waitington have not seen each other since.

    Oda Nobunaga
  • Since the events of the episode take place from 1590 - 1600, this would make Whisper at least 420 years old.
  • Whisper would have met Nate in 2010 if Shadowside 2040 is confirmed to be 30 years in the future. This would also mean Whisper was sealed away in 1820, having spent 220 years alone from Waitington’s death, 1600.

Dub Differences[]

  • Part of the scenes of Naoto feeling distraught for being a "know-nothing" was cut for unknown reasons.
  • The special opening for the episode was replaced with the regular opening. Though, this wasn't done when the video game was released in western territories.
